Environment: sustainable mobility
“Sustainable mobility is part of the total mix of measures that we want to take to reduce our CO2 footprint.”
On October 25 2021, Viroclinics-DDL signed the ‘Rotterdam Climate Alliance Sustainable Mobility’ statement.
The aim of the Mobility Climate Alliance is to agree with Rotterdam companies to reduce the CO2 emissions of the mobility of their employees. In 2030, with the combined efforts Rotterdam will be a city in which the air is clean and in which CO2 emissions from traffic are halved. This can be done by making cycling, walking and public transport more attractive, encourage working from home and by replacing fossil mobility with electric (shared) mobility.
By signing this statement, we have committed ourselves to reduce 50% commuting-related CO2 -emissions of our employees by 2030 (in comparison to 2016).
To determine a baseline measurement for CO2 emission, we made use of the tool MobilityAnalyst. It provided us insight into the commuting behaviour of our employees and the environmental impact. It also gave us insight in the areas where the there’s room for improvement.
We are currently working on a plan and commuting policy to reduce our commuting related CO2 footprint. After the pandemic a significant group of our employees has agreed on a hybrid working situation with their managers. That already has a great effect on our CO2 reduction efforts. But for obvious reasons, for a large number of operational staff hybrid working is not possible. Therefore, we look into additional opportunities to reduce our environmental impact. Options are incentives such as free bicycle mechanic services to stimulate commuting by (electric) bike and further incentivize public transport and/or carpooling. Last year we had an e-bike try out pool to enable colleagues to experience commuting by electrical bike and stimulate it. The initiative was widely used by employees form both Rijswijk and Rotterdam.
